The answer is……..you don’t. You can’t so there’s no point in trying. Jesus died instead of me. It’s not a credit card, loan or mortgage.

I was obviously having a ‘wow’ moment the other day. I was thinking in astonishment of all that God has done through J1010. More than 200 children’s lives transformed, a number of young and older lives saved, a high number (around 50) babies born safely in the J1010 Medical Centre, hundreds of thousands of litres of clean, safe water collected in our tanks – and dozens of other stories of God’s loving provision and lives that are changed by him forever.

Muslims believe that there is a ‘tipping point’ – a moment when the mass of our sinfulness and failure is outweighed on the celestial scales by the good that we have done. No-one apart from Allah apparently knows when that is or what the reward will be. One of the many reasons that I’m not a Muslim is that I don’t think this is even close to believable – the wrong that I have done is not mitigated by the right that God has done through me.

The last three years serving God through J1010 have cost me more than £100,000, hundreds of hours of (sinful) worrying, thousands of hours of grafting at altitude and any hope of a life of leisure, luxury or relaxation because the work will NEVER be finished. (‘The poor will always be with you’ – Jesus). And this massive truth hit me hard – I (we) don’t do this work of loving the poor, providing safe water and sanitation, educating the young and doing our bit to heal the sick to repay Jesus.

We do it to obey Jesus. And there is a world of difference.
